... no, i already said that the very first scene in this movie was a dream that Nick was having, a flashback sorta thing. His wife and son are dead. They only live on in memory now.

Oh, so there's not chance of his wife or son actually surviving. But i guess survival of the greatest.
In Dawn, when he saw the giant crowd of zombies, he remembered back when his wife and kids were brutally killed right in front of him. The beginning of this movie basically gets a better look at the origin of the zombies, and it's sorta like a prequel scene.
Nick's at the shi-tie mart, a clerk is infected, killing happens, then the army rushes in and totally kills the fuck out of everyone, Nick escapes, and then drives home..
That's where the events of Dawn start.
After that scene, the movie goes back to what is currently happening to the survivors, when they're on the boat after Day.
Is that clear enough?

Um.. Yeah.. What is Nick supposed to do? The safest thing to do is go home, might as well watch Shaun of the Dead. But then when he tries to help someone escape the zombies, they know where he's been hiding and they start trying to break in the house.
And the deli owner, (It's ROSTELLO) stayed in the deli and created a barricade of shopping carts. He's in a deli, that's loads of food, and he can use it as bait for zombies..
