Oh hey! I remember seeing your other SH works, glad to hear you've been enjoying the series! SH4 is super fun, though it is a bit janky and somewhat awkward on some ends with the controls (some would argue that the controls are part of the horror of Silent Hill.) It changes up the formula a bit, but I'm super eager to see what you come up with for that one.

ANYWAY THIS PIECE! As with the others, I love it. I love how Mary/Maria isn't specifically seen, but her touch is still felt by James in this. I have to ask- one of her sleeves seems to be a bit lighter in color than the other, is one arm meant to be Mary and the other meant to be Maria? Either way, great work with the butterflies and the iconic final save point. Keep it up!

Ruedefaux responds:

Haha SH4 is definitely different but i really like what theyve done with it~ It might be my next favourite in the series (the first is my favourite) because it has a lot of themes I really enjoy working with in my own personal work~ I'm excited to work on it as well.

BUT YES youre correct~ I wanted to show both of the ladies somehow and what they represent to James in a subtle way :D

Thank you!

I love how much utter style and flair this has. The subject itself, the background, the texture, the contrast, all very well done.
also #same

Ruedefaux responds:

thank you~

Nice! Great style that stays consistent throughout the piece, and impeccable work with the perspective! I really like the shading and rust/weathering details.

thank you so much im glad you like it

Very interesting, and extremely well made. The colors and contrast of the city lights on the horizon are spot-on, and really multiply the strength of the already captivating atmosphere this piece provides.

Eurns responds:

thanks <3

Holy moly. This is fantastic! I love the almost watercolor-esque feeling of the trees, matched with the sharper details of the grass below. The reflections of the water were very well done, too!

Sabretooth2611 responds:

Thank you so much :3

Love it, your work never disappoints :D I like the subtle changes in surrounding light as the traffic lights change. The purple in here is so satisfying to look at as well.

moertel responds:

Thank you! I love it when someone appreciates all the little details I added. <3

Is this watercolor? Certain strokes of fur, and the shading towards the bottom would indicate this, but sometimes it's a bit hard to tell with how good computer software is at emulating traditional art these days.
Regardless, very well done. Those brush strokes I mentioned earlier are highly effective and done just right. I love the smokey composition, and the detail in their eyes is absolutely striking. Love the symbolism too. Keep it up!

Jarrodjvandenberg responds:

It's digital, using watercolor brushes.

Thank you very much! I really appreciate that!

Very interesting and colorful. I feel like there are some spots, namely around her face, where you could have done more with the detail. Something about her left arm looks off, too- specifically around her wrist leading into her hand. Aside from that, nice! I like the background colors/textures.

Jarrodjvandenberg responds:

Thank you, I appreciate the critique and I concur.

This one! I love the colors here. Absolutely stunning composition and very thought provoking. I love the background textures, and the "bokeh" effect that it looks like you emulated somewhat. The piece, while giving a sense of intimacy, also seems to give off feelings of uncertainty, morose, almost depression or exhaustion. Maybe that's just me projecting.. The color palette definitely doesn't look like an easy one to tackle. With the warmer and cool tones lies room for conflict, but you've gracefully managed to weave them together almost seamlessly.

Keep it up!

Jarrodjvandenberg responds:

Thank you; It was an odd challenge and I so appreciate someone noticing that. Thank you very much!

Lmao look at all these "front page police" who came out of their caves to try to dictate what gets featured on the front page of NG. People who contribute very little to nothing to the website, no surprise there. These reviewers keep linking a photo they're saying this picture is traced from, but they're not going to go through any other art featuring video game characters in their iconic poses claiming that they're traced because they don't have a political agenda to puff themselves up behind. Are they going to look up art of animals and find the exact reference photos they used?

First off, anyone with eyes can probably infer that the picture being constantly linked was used as a reference. To devalue this work based solely on that is a very cheap and shitty way to express how upset you are with people demanding basic human rights. I know that's what it's about, too, because no one else has managed to provide criticism that isn't fueled by their own bias or ignorance. Obviously, judging by the rest of Jarrod's work, he knows what he is doing. He is a very talented artist. When you're dealing with a specific person doing a specific pose, there unfortunately isn't much room for creativity in that specific part of the work.
That being said, there truly isn't too much to this piece. I think it works well on its own, but I feel like more could have been done with the background or maybe other icons or symbols could have been in the background. I get what you're going for with the simplistic look, though.
I like what you did with the shading and lighting. The brighter parts of his body seem to have this "glow" that I can't really describe. Aside from that, there truly isn't too much to say here.

All lives can't matter until black lives do.

Jarrodjvandenberg responds:

Thank you so much for this; I did use a reference, I never said I didn't lol. Traced is funny, but appreciated, given how challenging this was.

I couldn't agree more, all lives can't matter until black lives do.

Regardless of the front page police and people who obviously are going to be pissed, it's an honor like no other to be featured on the front page and I almost passed out backwards because of it.

Nightmares, dreams, and everything between.
